A New Series Begins: MOOC with Me

For those of you who joined me for the previous series , we found some great information for those first few months on the job.

But wouldn't it be great to prepare ahead of time?  Use those days or weeks before you start to create a plan?

Of course it would

And it turns out…...there’s a course for that!

I've found a course that  “....provides practical, easy-to-use tools to guide an individual who is transitioning to a new job”.

Hmm….. that sounds promising.

It’s a short online course (MOOC) offered by Northwestern University.

Wait…..a what?

MOOCs

If you’re new to MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses, let me take a minute to explain.

MOOCs are online courses offered by universities from around the world.  Topics range from astronomy to xml.

There are several sites that host these courses. The ones I’ve used and can recommend are Coursera, edX and Futurelearn (UK).

There are 2 options for taking courses.  Fee or Free.  You can take the certificate track which provides a certificate of completion and other benefits (fee) . Or you can audit - full course, no certificate (free).  I’ve tried both and prefer the audit track.  But have clients who prefer the certificate track.  Both offer great value, so choose what best suits your needs.

Now..... back to the course.

Power Onboarding

It's a 4 week course called Power Onboarding.  With a suggested time commitment of 3 hours/week.

It focuses on the 90 days before you start a new job.  Now….. most people don't have a 90 day window. But you can adapt the  materials to fit your timeline.

Interested?

It looks like a new course starts every week, so when you’re ready to start, there will be a course to suit your schedule.

To register, create a Coursera account.  Then enroll in the Power Onboarding Course.

MOOC with Me:  Power Onboarding

I’ve registered and taken the course already.

Each week I'll post my take on one module.  Highlights, tools, thoughts.... stuff I plan to use with clients in the future.

There are 6 modules, so I’ll take 6 weeks to complete the course.

And thus begins my new series - MOOC with Me.

I'd love it if you joined me.

Wrapping Up

That precious time before you start a new job can be used to prepare, prepare, prepare.  If you're not sure where to start,  the Power Onboarding course looks promising.

If you're taking the course, enjoy.  Drop me a note when you’re done, I'd love to hear  your thoughts.

Or better yet, join me each week and share your highlights.
