The Basics as Competitve Advantage: Google

Last month I suggested you check out an article about the competitive advantage management basics can offer.

One of the authors wrote a follow-up article about a company that’s had a little success with this approach.

Google.

15 years ago Google was growing. Figuring things out. Especially on the people side of running a business. So they did what Google does. They went all-in on the analytics. People analytics.

And guess what they found?

It’s all about the basics.

The article, titled Google’s Secret Formula for Management? Doing the Basics Well, sums it up nicely.

If you’re interested in how this could work in your organization, be prepared. It’s hard work.

But…

…. because basic management practices are difficult to adopt, the firms that manage to do so see a major impact on organizational performance. Any company that successfully adopted Google’s management tools would be likely to see huge gains.

Hard work. Big payoff.

Are you up for it?

If so, you can learn all about it in the book Work Rules written by Google’s former SVP of People Operations.

Here’s a very short summary.

And the book.

If you prefer the movie, there are dozens of talks and interviews with the author on YouTube. Including this Talks@Google presentation.
